Recent Changes

I’ve been working hard adding fly patterns, so I thought I’d highlight a few recent changes you may not have seen. Even if you’re not a tyer, read on because some of these fly patterns are well known flies that can be purchased at your local fly shop. You might recognize the names…now you have a picture to go with it!

In addition, I’ll be adding a few steelhead fly patterns in the near future. Any favorites I should include on the RiverKeeper Flies Steelhead Flies page? Be sure to leave a comment about your favorite steelhead fly.

Why add more fly patterns you ask? Here’s a few reasons:

  • First, I’m a fly tyer.
  • Second, I’m a fly tyer..can’t help myself.
  • When adding Throw Back Thursday Flies, several of my readers asked me to add fly pattern sheets for those flies.
  • In some of the posts, I discuss similar or variant fly patterns, so I’ve added them as well.

Here is a list in case you haven’t seen them. I’ve sorted them by the Fly Pattern page categories:

As I mentioned in last week’s Normal Fishing Season Ends post, someone flipped the switch on November 2 and the weather has dramatically changed. In fact, we’ve had a little snow recently. That tells me it’s COLD outside. In fact, it’s 26 degrees this morning as I finish this week’s post. So I’m returning to the…

  • Quigley Cripple PMD

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Quigley Cripple PMD version. The Quigley Cripple was developed by Bob Quigley in the late 1970’s for Northern California’s Fall River. As the story goes, Bob was fishing a Humpy and catching fish with it. The wing got chewed up and he caught many more fish with…

  • Salmonflies

Yup – it’s time for Salmonflies to hatch. We all wait for this time of year when these BIG bugs become active and the fish go crazy. As in reckless with voracious appetites. Trout have already seen March Browns and Caddis this spring. But these bugs are BIG! Have you ever looked into the gullet of…

  • Stalcup’s Emerging Dun TBT

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Stalcup’s Emerging Dun TBT. You may have seen a couple Shane Stalcup flies in previous TBT posts. I received a Comment of appreciation for highlighting Shane’s flies from a friend of his, Jimbo Busse. I always enjoy receiving Comments about my TBT posts because I’ve stirred a thought…

  1. Nice that you added Lee Clark’s new fly. The name is Clark’s Lady Stone. Tested and proven by Eric Steele this summer….It really works well.
