At the Vise

I’ve been tying flies at the vise, for customers as well as our own fly boxes. I enjoy tying a variety of flies for my customers. Many of them I don’t fish, but they are a joy to tie. In fact, remember the 8/0 BEAST Fleyes I featured a few weeks ago (link HERE)? I received a couple snapshots today of my flies in Marlin mouths! Very rewarding to say the least.

We recently spent a couple of weeks in Kona, HI and I took materials with me to tie up Fat Albert flies for our trip to Argentina in January. I was able to get a couple dozen #8 black and #10 tan flies completed.

The remaining flies are for a good customer.

Finally, we were lucky enough to witness a minor eruption of Kilaeua. A larger one followed two days later when we were on the jet headed home where the north and south craters were spewing lava 1500 feet high! We were still impressed to see this…

We got up yesterday, packed the last few items and now we’re on the road to Montana. I’m a “just in time” fly tyer on occasion, and yesterday was no exception. I took the wheel for the first three hours or driving and got into the passenger seat. What to do? You guessed it…tie a…

  1. Should the tails on the pheasant tail soft hackles be longer than the hook shank length. In the photo they look very long to my eyes.
