There are a lot of talented fly tyers out there. A rare combination is when you find someone who can tie beautiful flies and TEACH too. Davie McPhail is one of those tyers. Davie is from Scotland and has a Youtube channel I frequently watch. Youtube states he joined on June 26, 2009 and has posted…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is called The Baker. It’s another Atlantic Salmon fly I pulled out of an older box, the same box as The Kate and Rosy Dawn. The Baker is one of the oldest classic Atlantic Salmon fly patterns. As I’m learning with my brief history research on these flies, several…
You might be surprised, but I’ve been known to tie flies while riding in a car. But this week, I’m tying flies in Paradise! Last fall, it was on the road to the Pendleton Round-up in September. I was able to finish a dozen RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripples. Or how about this video mentioned in my post Fly…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is called The Kate. It’s another Atlantic Salmon fly from an old fly box I ended up with. The Kate is credited to Mrs. Courtney, who developed the fly in the middle of the 19th century…yes, that long ago! One of the few flies credited to a woman fly…
Recently, I received a comment on RiverKeeper Flies asking my opinion about how to fish unweighted nymphs. “How do I keep these small flies on the bottom?” I thought it was a great question and guess what…it turned into today’s post! I’m in Maui writing my post today and thought it was appropriate to add a…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Rosy Dawn. I am a neophyte when it comes to Atlantic Salmon flies. I’ve tied the Golden Butterfly for a fly plate and was very satisfied with my first fly. I found several Atlantic Salmon flies in an old fly box given to me and had no…
Well, it’s time to say “Goodbye Boise”! I had a wonderful time at the 2016 Western Idaho Fly Fishing Expo this weekend in Boise, Idaho. This is my 4th year tying flies at the Expo and it’s good to see people I recognize from year-to-year. On Saturday, I decided to demonstrate the RiverKeeper Callibaetis Emerger, which…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Lightning Bug. I recently added the Lightning Bug nymph to the Fly Patterns list on RiverKeeper Flies. As I searched for the original fly pattern and who developed it, I thought it would be a good candidate for a TBT fly. I was surprised the Lightning Bug was over…
As I write this week’s post, I look out the window at a few inches of snow covering the ground. It’s winter. And I’ve always said winter is fly tying season. I’ve been working on a couple of orders for Custom Flies. In fact, I finished this order last night. He doesn’t plan to use them until at…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Hemingway Caddis. And the top view: The Hemingway Caddis is a variation of the Henryville Special developed in the 1930’s by Hiram Brobst. Mike Lawson created the variation for Jack Hemingway, son of the famous author Ernest Hemingway, for fishing the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River in…
