Attend the 2020 NW Fly Tyer and Fly Fishing Expo

I hope you are finalizing your plans to attend the 2020 NW Fly Tyer and Fly Fishing Expo in Albany, OR. It’s just over 3 weeks away.

As usual, you’ll see me demonstrating a few flies that will catch fish!

It’s been several years since I took an active part in the Expo. I was treasurer for about 4 1/2 years (2011 – 2016) as well as Chair to lead the 2015 and 2016 Expos.

You can read about the Expos in the following RiverKeeper Flies posts:

While I’ve stepped away from a leadership role in the Expo, I continue to help out where I can. This is the third year I’ve taught fly tying classes during the show. In addition, I provide a little assistance updating the website, mainly on the fly tyer pages.

If you are a fly tyer, you won’t want to miss the Expo. It’s a great place to watch some VERY talented fly tyers. You’ll learn techniques, how to use new and old materials, and perhaps find a new effective fly to tie for your fly fishing.

I can’t begin to comment on which tyers to watch. They are all good with their craft.

I’ll be teaching a fly tying class about CDC feathers on Friday afternoon, which I understand is already sold out.

But stop by my table at 11:45 – 2:15 both days (Friday – table 3 and Saturday table 32) to watch be demonstrate a fly or two.

I hope to see you at the Expo!

Enjoy… go fish!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve written about our Montana Road Trip where we fished the Madison, Depuy Spring Creek, Stillwater, and Slough Creek & the Lamar. I thought I’d provide a summary of the effective flies we used in our Montana fly box. When selecting flies, I always try to imitate the insects I think…

  • My Confidence Fly Box

I was on the river a few weeks ago, sitting on a log waiting for fish to rise and begin feeding on mayflies floating downstream. I pulled out my PMD fly box to select either an Improved Sparkle Dun, RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripple, or a Parachute variant I tied recently. It got me to asking…

  • How to play and land fish

Here are a few thoughts about how to play and land fish. Over the years, I’ve changed my tactics. I use a different leader size to fish my spring creek these days. I used a Rio Powerflex 9 foot 5x (5.0 lbs) leader right out of the package for years and was fortunate to catch…

  • Hares Ear Nymph

This week’s TBT fly is the Hares Ear Nymph. It’s an old pattern and usually one of the first flies taught to beginner fly tyers. For some reason, many fly fishers start fishing this fly and then go away from it…I might be somewhat guilty as well. My quick history review shows multiple references as to…
