Ray Bergman’s Esmeralda

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Ray Bergman’s Esmeralda. It’s been awhile since I featured an old fly and decided to get out Ray Berman’s Trout and find a fly to tie.

I just like the elegance and simplicity of a Bergman wet fly and it forces me to practice mounting duck quill wings whenever I feature one of Bergman’s flies.

Bergman’s book includes colored plates to illustrate the dry and wet flies with a description of each fly in the back. It was the first book to provide color fly illustrations.

You can find the Esmeralda wet fly on Plate No. 3 page 48 of Bergman’s Trout (1940 – fourth printing).

I’ve featured several Ray Bergman flies as a Throw Back Thursday Fly. If you’d like to see more, click on the Ray Bergman Flies Category on the right-hand panel or HERE.

My favorites I’ve tied over the years include – Lord Baltimore, Montreal, Babcock, and Bouncer.

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Ray Bergman’s Grackle. Bergman’s Grackle is a wet fly listed in his book entitled Trout (1940 – fourth printing) on page 64, Plate No. 4. As I’ve mentioned many times, I enjoy highlighting a Bergman wet fly because it forces me to sit down and tie these elegant flies. I…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the LaFontaine Antron Bi-Visible. The LaFontaine Antron Bi-Visible is a fly found in LaFontaine’s Legacy, a book authored by Al and Gretchen Beatty about 26 fly patterns Gary LaFontaine never finished publishing. As the name of the fly states, antron is used instead of white hackle. The fly is a take-off…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Mike Mercer’s Profile Spinner – PMD. I found this fly pattern in Mike Mercer’s Creative Fly Tying (2005) book. He relays a problem he had fishing spinner patterns on California’s Fall River where thousands and thousands of natural PMD Spinners were floating downstream with trout gorging themselves on these insects….

  1. “Dink” Rhinehardt who ran a shop out of his colonial home in Chester NJ, gifted me a 2nd edition around 1976. It has a place of honor on my bookshelf. The color plates are great. Is there more comprehensive aggregation of old time wet flies?
