OK, it may be a little strange to have an old fly box rather than a named fly, but it’s just to interesting to pass up.

A friend of mine sent two old aluminum fly boxes to me in the mail to check out. Here is one of them. I opened the worn box with amazement and tried to imagine where these flies were used. How many times did the box see water? How old is it?

I’ll never know the answers to these questions, but one thing is certain…it made me smile. And I hope it made it’s original owner smile as well.

All the compartment lids still open with ease. I wonder how many flies this box has held over the years.

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Muddler Minnow. Muddlers imitate various bait fish, namely sculpins. This is a fly I tied many years ago…a feeble attempt at best. The development of the Muddler Minnow was attributed to Don Gapen of Anoka, Minnesota in 1937. Don’s parents ran the Gateway Lodge Resort on the shore…

I’m looking at the calendar and note the first day of September is only a couple of days away. Usually, by this time of year I would have pulled out my fly boxes to see if I need to tie more flies for September fishing. These are my provider boxes. My fly boxes seem to…

  • Winter and Blue Wing Olives

Thanksgiving is only a few days away, which means winter is right around the corner. Do you know what that means? Blue Wing Olives will be the mayflies I plan to imitate. Gone are the bigger mayflies. What will get me through the next few months are hatches of BWO’s. So are you ready for…

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Since it is Thanksgiving, my wife thought is appropriate this week’s TBT would be the Cates Turkey. I tied one years ago on Thanksgiving. It was developed by Jerry Cate in the 1960’s at Davis Lake for Callibaetis. I think I’ll have to try it next summer! Hope you like it.

  1. That last fly, with the deer hair body: Can you describe how to tie it, the receipt and how to use it?

Thanks for your comment. No fly pattern sheet for this fly. Just took from one of the compartments. Looks like grizzly tail, wing and hackle with spun deer hair body.
