The annual NW Fly Tyer and Fly Fishing Expo is fast approaching. This year’s title is Bugs and Bamboo and is scheduled for March 8 and 9 this year in Albany, OR.

The image above is from 2017 when I was awarded the Stan Walters Memorial Fly Tier of the Year, recognition I am very proud of.

This is a wonderful event for all levels of fly fishers. In fact, I’ve written posts in previous years you can find here:

Here is my schedule for tying on each day:

  • Friday – 9 to 11:30 and 11:45 to 2:15 (Table 57)
  • Saturday – 9 to 11:30 (Table 43)

In addition, I’m teaching a class entitled Effective Golden Stonefly Patterns on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. You will learn to tie two of my favorite Golden Stone imitations, the Clark’s Lady Stone and a Chubby Chernobyl. Bring your vise, tools, and a patch of stimulator deer hair. I’ll provide the rest of the materials. This is an intermediate fly tying class, not for beginners.

As I write this, there are still 5 seats available, so you better act fast!

Go to the NW Expo website to see the other workshops available on each day.

In case you aren’t close to the event in Oregon, here are links to my RiverKeeper Flies YouTube channel where I demonstrate how I tie the flies. You’ll see the purple version below, but I plan on using Golden Stonefly colors in the class.

If you live close to Oregon, I hope to see you at the show!

Enjoy…go fish!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Since it is Thanksgiving, my wife thought is appropriate this week’s TBT would be the Cates Turkey. I tied one years ago on Thanksgiving. It was developed by Jerry Cate in the 1960’s at Davis Lake for Callibaetis. I think I’ll have to try it next summer! Hope you like it.

  1. Hello, Fly Fishing Expo,

I was wondering if you have the 2025 schedule figured out yet?

I’m from Idaho, used to live in Albany and would like to attend this year.

I hope this is being monitored and would appreciate a response.

    Thank you,
    Robert
