Patagonia Fly Fishing Teaser and Zoom Fly Tying

We are back from Argentina after spending a week fishing at Estancia Chochoy Mallin with SET Fly Fishing. We had a wonderful time and I need more time to adequately describe our experience. Seems a little jet lag set in after being 5 hours ahead of our Pacific time zone. This week’s post includes a little Patagonia fly fishing teaser and Zoom fly tying information.

This image is our first ride from the airport in Loncopué to the Chochoy Mallin lodge. We arrived at the airport in Loncopué after travelling from San Martin de Andes for 3 1/2 hours. Our 20 minute flight saved somewhere between 3 and 4 hours additional driving. Yes, we were in a remote location in northwestern Patagonia.

We spent every day fly fishing in Patagonia in a helicopter. What an experience! And before you ask, we are in the back seat of this Bell 407.

The image below is where we met our ride after a day of fly fishing the Buraleo River. More on the fishing next week.

I’ve been catching up on a few things around the house, including shoveling about 6 inches of snow yesterday! In fact, I’m headed out again this morning after I finish this post. Looks like another 2 inches or so. I completed a fly tying materials order with Hareline Dubbin’ in preparation of the fly orders waiting for me I mentioned in last week’s post.

This coming Friday night (2/17/2023), I’ll be the instructor for Gretchen and Al Beatty’s Zoom fly tying class. The flies will be a couple of streamer patterns…the Dolly Llama and EP Bait Fish.

  • A Fish Story

In this week’s post, I wanted to share a fish story that happened to me last week. How many times do you walk along the river and say “there’s gotta be a fish there”? It happens to me frequently. I’ve been lucky enough to fish a lot, caught some fish over the years and perhaps…

  • October Caddis

Summer’s over. It’s Fall and the weather is just beginning to turn. My wife doesn’t like hearing that. But what does that mean to a fly fisher? Well, October is just around the corner and I saw a few October Caddis on the river last week. I thought about how important they are to the…

  • Fly tying – on the road

Sometimes, I’m a “just-in-time” fly tyer. This video was shot on a Montana road trip. We’re headed east from Spokane towards the Big Hole river and I was trying to tie up some Spruce Moth patterns. Well, we seemed to find a section of bad road on the interstate with lots of bridges. As you…

  • Metallic Caddis

The Metallic Caddis is this week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly. I found this fly pattern in the mid-90’s from Randall Kaufmann’s Tying Nymphs book. I don’t think I had tied a lot of bead-head nymphs as beads only came to America in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. Tying Nymphs stated Dennis Black of Umpqua Feather Merchants signed…

  • Completing a Fly Order

I’ve been at the vise lately, completing a fly order for a good customer. I thought you might enjoy some fishy looking flies! I took materials with me to the Big Island of Hawaii and tied all the Sparkle Duns, a total of 60. Since I’ve been home, I finished the order and thought I’d…
