Recent Changes

OK, let’s see if I can get your attention…

Metolius River Rainbow
Metolius Rainbow | www.johnkreft.com

Nice rainbow, huh?

We’ve been catching fish on $3 Dip, RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripple, Beetle Bailey, and an occasional Elk Hair Caddis.

Now that you’re paying attention, here are some recent changes you may have missed.

A few flies I’ve added to the Fly Patterns tab:

I continue to add fly pattern sheets. You’ll be seeing a few more nymphs in the near future.

Resources

  • I’ve added a link for a website called Animated Knots, a great video resource for how to tie knots.
  • Bob left a comment about using the Davy knot. Follow the link in Resources and check it out.
  • Updated my favorite Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Books Learning from the Water by Rene Harrop and Montana’s Best Fishing Waters.

Check out the Popular Posts section on the right-hand sidebar. These are links to the most viewed blog posts. Be sure to read them if you’ve missed any.

If you are on Facebook, check out and LIKE my RiverKeeper Flies page. I’ve started a “Throw Back Thursday” post of older flies that were popular years ago and sometimes, but not always forgotten. The first two were a Tied Down Caddis and the Zug Bug.

Thanks for following RiverKeeper Flies!

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Diving Damsel nymph. I learned about the Diving Damsel nymph from a customer who contacted me to tie up a few custom flies. • Die Hard Winter Fly Fisher

I’ve been out on the river only a couple of times since the first of the year. It’s that time of year when you decide if you’re a die hard winter fly fisher because many days the temperatures hover around 32 degrees or colder. March is the month of transition. Spring weather is right around…

  • Eddy fishing

Foam is home. Have you ever heard that phrase? The longer version (my version) is…foam is where fish feel safe and food is readily available. When I fish new rivers, I am always on the lookout for what I hope is some good eddy fishing. Why? That’s where I usually find very nice fish. You…

  • On the Road to Montana

We got up yesterday, packed the last few items and now we’re on the road to Montana. I’m a “just in time” fly tyer on occasion, and yesterday was no exception. I took the wheel for the first three hours or driving and got into the passenger seat. What to do? You guessed it…tie a…

  • PMD Time

It’s PMD time again! I always look forward to this hatch. It begins in late May and will continue through September. Many hatches are in full swing now on my local waters in Central Oregon. Besides PMDs, there are Salmonflies, Green Drakes, and Caddis. It’s a wonderful time of year! PMDs, otherwise known as Pale…

  • Midges

Midges. Do you know what a midge is? And how important midges are in the trout’s diet? Very! You’ll find midges in rivers and lakes. Most of the time, midge pupae are the fly patterns experienced fly fishers concentrate on fishing. More on what that means shortly.  I just finished these flies as I complete my…
