Peter Bowers from the Patient Angler in Bend taught this fly during a Central Oregon Flyfisher’s Winter Fly Tying class a couple of years ago. He said the Water Boatman was a fly tied for Lake in the Dunes many years ago.

I wish I knew the origin of the fly.

I tied one for John Shewey, editor of Northwest Fly Fishing magazine. An article about Water Boatman flies is in the latest edition (July/August 2017). My friend John Sherry of Netknots posted the following picture on my RiverKeeper Flies Facebook page.

No photo description available.

Pick up a copy for yourself to learn more.

Since I wrote about Facebook, it might be a good time to encourage you to follow me on FaceBook (RiverKeeper Flies) or Instagram (@riverkeeperflies). I periodically post some pictures on these sites.

Enjoy…go fish!

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Denny Rickards Stillwater Bug. If you are a stillwater fly fisher and live in Oregon, you know who Denny Rickards is. If not, you should! I picked up this fly from Denny’s booth at a NW Fly Tyer and Fly Fishing Expo a few years ago in Albany,…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Mosquito. More of a top view showing split, upright wings. This is another fly from a box of old flies I borrowed from my friend Jim Fisher. He learned to fly fish in Northern Idaho. This fly is probably from the 1950’s or 60’s.

I spent a little time in the garage this week sorting fly tying materials. I periodically receive donations of fly tying materials and tools as well as fly fishing gear to benefit my Central Oregon Flyfishers club, the kids program – Next Cast Flyfishers, and Central Oregon Project Healing Waters. I’m always intrigued when I…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Quigley Cripple, developed by Bob Quigley in the late 1970’s for Northern California’s Fall River. Seems like Northern California is the birthplace of several flies I like. Here is my Green Drake Quigley Cripple. As the story goes, Bob was fishing a Humpy and catching fish with…
