Sanchez’s Double Bunny

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Scott Sanchez’s Double Bunny streamer.

Sanchez states he first thought about this fly in 1988 on a trip to Belize. His inspiration for the fly were two other flies they were using, a Kiwi Muddler and a FisHair Cuda Fly. He wondered what might happen “if I put together the pulsating action of rabbit fur and the undulation motion of a ‘cuda fly?”

Back home in Jackson, WY he saw large trout chasing smaller ones and his thought about a “super barracuda” came to mind. He sat down at the vise and the first Double Bunny was created.

It was an effective fly and won the Jackson Hole One-Fly contest for three straight years in the early 1990s.

Scott ties many variations of the fly in 3 – 5″ versions using many colors. I’m sure it still works today!

Enjoy…go fish, stay safe!

It’s been cold out lately. As I write today’s post early this morning, the thermometer reads 7 degrees. That’s right…single digits. For some reason, I haven’t made it out to the river lately. Too cold I guess. What should I do on a cold winter day? Tie flies! Here is a picture of Whychus Creek,…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Bekeart Special. It’s been awhile since I highlighted a steelhead fly. I found the Bekeart Special steelhead fly pattern in John Shewey’s book entitled Classic Steelhead Flies. If you haven’t had a chance to peruse this book, go to your local fly shop and see if they have it in…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Ray Bergman Dark Spinner. The Ray Bergman Dark Spinner is a wet fly listed in his book entitled Trout (1940 – fourth printing) on page 38, Plate No. 2. I usually tie just one fly for my TBT posts. I’m not trying to make them perfect, just…

  • Wickhams Fancy

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Wickhams Fancy. It’s another fly I pulled from Ray Bergman’s book Trout.  Created in the 1880’s by one of the Wickhams, there appears to be a little family feud as to which family member really developed the fly. Most credit Dr. T.C. Wickham of Winchester with the fly’s creation…
