Still at the Vise

I’m still at the vise and finished another fly order this week. I’m almost caught up with my fly orders, which is a good thing because we’re leaving on another trip in two weeks. More on that later.

This was a small order consisting of Art Flick’s Red Quill pictured above and the Delaware Adams.

My customer found me on the web because I featured these flies a few years ago in Throw Back Thursday Flies. I enjoyed tying them again.

The weather gods must have been watching my customer list and told me to stay home from the river to finish tying these flies. The weather changed and it actually snowed here yesterday!

Rather than head to the river, I stayed home and created a couple of fly tying videos. I posted one yesterday and will post the other soon.

Here is a link to my RiverKeeper Flies YouTube channel where I demonstrate how I tie Flick’s Red Quill.

Enjoy…go fish!

  • Ray Bergman’s Red Ash

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Ray Bergman’s Red Ash. I enjoy featuring and tying Ray Bergman flies. While they appear simple to tie, I struggle to set many of the wings. One reason I feature his flies is to force myself to practice tying them. Watson’s Fancy is simple wet fly listed on…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday post is about my Thompson Model A Vise. This was my very first vise. I purchased it from Wayne Doughton of Doughton’s Hardware in Salem, OR. I’m pretty sure it was 1970. This vise served me well for about 20 years before I replaced it with a McKenzie vise and…

This is a size 16 Pale Morning Dun Sparkle Dun Mayfly or PMD for short. One of my favorite flies. It’s in the top 5 of many fishermen in the know. The Sparkle Dun is a Craig Matthews pattern from Blue Ribbon Flies. I tie this simple, yet effective fly in size 22 Blue Wing Olive…

  • Swannundaze Midge

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Swannundaze Midge. The fly was developed by Boyd Aigner of Seattle Washington in the 1980’s.  The Swannundaze Midge is one I tied many years ago that I found in Randall Kaufmann’s Tying Nymphs book. Tying Nymphs and Tying Dry Flies were two important books for me and I tied many…

  • Simple Flies

I like simple flies. There’s something elegant about making a beautiful fly with only a few materials…that catches fish! Some people call them “guide flies.” While I’m not a guide, I enjoy sharing my flies with friends and strangers. And it feels good when someone says “hey, I caught a fish on your fly!” The…
