Atherton flies – For some reason, the Atherton series of dry flies really spoke to me this year. I like the classic dry fly style and am still working hard to tie them in a consistent way.

Here’s looking forward to a safe and prosperous New Year!

Enjoy…go fish, stay safe!

My fly tying continues this week and includes working to fill an order for a good customer. Here are a few #16 PMD Quigley Film Critic flies off my Renzetti vise. They imitate a PMD hatching out of their nymphal shuck. Notice the body is brown and thorax a PMD yellow. I posted this image…

  • Skunk

Today’s TBT fly is the Skunk, an old steelhead pattern and keeping with the theme in this week’s blog post – Steelhead Flies. I tied this Skunk fly many years ago.

  • No. 8 Water-hen Bloa

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the No. 8 Water-hen Bloa. The Water-hen Bloa can be found in many of the old fly fishing and fly tying books. The first example is from page 24 of Yorkshire Trout Flies by T. E. Pritt (1885) “This fly is identical with the blue dun of Ronalds, and…

    1. Hi John

No, I don’t. I select flies who speak to me and try to provide examples from the past. Turns out I seem to fish fewer and fewer flies.

  1. An honor to have one of my patterns included among these classics – thanks for the recognition, John.
When I see RiverKeeper entries in my email, it’s always brings a pleasant “Oh boy!” response – especially on Throwback Thursday. Your photos and remembrances of some of my favorite waters, from Montana to the Metolious, are always a treat.
Best to you and Karen this coming year, and although the shop will no longer be there I won’t be that hard to find. Stay in touch – we’re overdue for some fishing.
    Best,
    – Chuck Stranahan
