Blue Ribbon Flies Baetis Soft Hackle

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Blue Ribbon Flies Baetis Soft Hackle.

A friend sent me this size 22 fly because we were discussing the wing material and how to tie them in small sizes.

The Baetis Soft Hackle from Blue Ribbon Flies can be found in Fly Patterns of Yellowstone – Volume Two by Craig Mathews and John Juracek. In fact, the fly above was tied by John.  The copyright date lists 2008 as the year it was published.

Craig and John credit Nick Nicklas, a former guide from Blue Ribbon as the one who developed this fly.

This fly is similar to my RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripple fly I tie as a dry fly. It has more hackle to float the fly. The Baetis Soft Hackle is generally fished wet just under the surface, although it can be dressed to float.

I think I might tie up a couple of these as I hear the Baetis or BWO are sporadically hatching on my home waters.

Blue Ribbon Flies is one of my favorite fly shops in West Yellowstone, MT. I highly recommend you stop in and say “hi” if you are in Yellowstone country.

Enjoy…go fish, stay safe!

I’m in a period of transition from fishing a lot to the fly tying vise. It’s a few days earlier than most years. • Mosquito

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Mosquito. More of a top view showing split, upright wings. This is another fly from a box of old flies I borrowed from my friend Jim Fisher. He learned to fly fish in Northern Idaho. This fly is probably from the 1950’s or 60’s. I’m still on…
