Thoughts from the River

It’s late October and I found myself sitting along the river a few days ago and reflected how grateful I was to fish the river as much as I do. Many of the fall leaves are fading or being blown away from the wind. And the atmospheric river will be here in a couple of days. I doubt the leaves will survive much longer. I live in a beautiful place, not only the scenery, but the fish as well. Here are a few thoughts from the river and images caputured recently.

The image above is the rainbow stripe of a fish caught recently. For some reason, I decided to crop in on this section and was astounded with the variety of color these scales showed!

This is the fish. Dancingtrout captured this image for me and I love how the water droplet and ring add to the final version.

The Rainbow ate an IOBO Humpy, a fly we’ve been using quite a bit lately.

I walked into the canyon yesterday and took this image of Sugar Springs. It’s always a beautiful spot to stop for a moment and enjoy what nature has to offer us.

I’ve been experimenting around with the Beast Fleye I shared last week. I’m pleased with how the fly “swims” and finally hooked a baby Bull Trout yesterday. Here is a link to the post in case you missed it.

The fly is about 6 inches long and tied on a 6/0 hook. The Bull Trout was only 13 inches. I wonder what it was thinking?

At some point, these fish are much more interested in “meat” than eating an aquatic insect…but I’ve caught large fish with nymphs as well.

This is the spot I enjoyed and got me thinking.

I was just sitting there enjoying my surroundings and saw a fish rise three times. It was close, so I didn’t even stand. I cast my Sparkle Dun PMD and this little 9 inch trout ate it on the first cast.

Even the small fish are beautiful.

The serenity on the river soothes my soul and I’m thankful for the river gods whenever I hook a fish.

Enjoy…go fish!

This week’s Throw Back Thursday post is a box of Mustad-Sproat hooks. If you read the post entitled Tyer’s Wax a couple of weeks ago, you might remember I wrote about Gretchen Beatty’s father “Dub” Evans who taught her to tie flies on a treadle sewing machine converted into a fly tying vise.

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Green Drake Hairwing Dun. The fly was created by Rene Harrop in the 1980’s. In fact, I found a Fly Fisherman magazine article Rene wrote explaining how he developed the Hairwing Dun. Looks like the fly was born in Rene’s mind as he fished the Firehole River. Evidently,…
