While sitting at the vise today, I decided to celebrate the 4th of July. Here’s what popped out the jaws.

I hope you read last week’s post about fishing our home waters the Metolius River. We continued to fish the river last week, but forest fires in the area have changed our plans this week. In fact, the road below Allingham Bridge is closed, including all the campgrounds. They were evacuated this weekend. The high…
How long has it been since you’ve been fishing? I thought so…it’s been a while, hasn’t it? But the good news is the weather is bound to change by the end of the month and May will bring some exciting insect hatches! You need to be prepared for that first day on the water. I…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Black Gordon. I found this fly in one of my steelhead fly boxes and thought it would be a good candidate for a TBT Fly. The Black Gordon is a well-known steelhead fly pattern developed on the North Umpqua River in the 1930’s by Clarence Gordon, a…
I’ve had a love / hate relationship with my knots the last couple of weeks. I was surprised because I tie hundreds of knots every year. I lost some nice fish because my knot didn’t hold. Whose fault was that? Bad leader? Nope…it was all mine. Here are the effective fly fishing knots I use….
I sometimes forget about the importance of mayfly spinners. I was on the river the other night with no visible activity. I decided to blind-cast in a couple locations where I know trout live. John,
I find the representation of the colors of our flag to be inspiring and beautiful in your hands. I suspect that patriotic fish everywhere would be similarly attracted to this fly. It is a shame that it is too beautiful to fish with, in my humble opinion. I hope you had a great Fourth of July. I enjoy the weekly RiverKeeper Flies and your other posts.
Thanks.
Jerry
