Fly Fishing the Rio Alumine with SET Fly Fishing

Our last two days at Casa de Campo found us fly fishing the Rio Alumine with SET Fly Fishing. This is a float section where SET provides a wonderful camping experience for their guests.

But first, I wanted to share links to the last couple of posts for my subscribers. It turns out my Mailchimp automated emails didn’t go out to you for some reason…and I have no idea why. I’m still in the process of troubleshooting, but here are the links if you’d like to backcast and catch up:

Floating the Rio Alumine was a wonderful way to end our week at Casa de Campo. We were a little tired from walking and wading the rivers and the temperatures had increased quite a bit. In fact, the first day on the river was well into the 90s. We were hoping to find a few green willow worms dropping from trees and willing trout eating our flies.

Hooked up shortly after launching on a dropper fly.

The Rio Alumine was a great river to float, offering eager trout in a scenic canyon.

These weren’t’ the biggest trout in the world, but they were eager, hard-fighting Rainbows. Each of us were able to hook and land several trout.

Several trout took the Perdigon dropper attached to our dry fly.

The trout were willing in the morning, but tapered off a little in the afternoon after a late lunch during the heat of the day and we called it an early afternoon and floated to camp.

Arriving at camp, we met Santi and Oscar who had set up tents, cots, and were preparing our dinner.

How about starting with empanadas?

And disco chicken was a favorite.

The wind was blowing that evening and we had seen smoke from a fire not far away. We were a little concerned as the wind was blowing in our direction, but Oscar was a former fire fighter and checked on the satellite phone to make sure we would be safe. I must say, it was certainly eerie that night!

Halfway through our float, Santi and Oscar caught us with the gear raft.

Here is one of the hopper imitations Birdy had us use. The fish seemed to like it.

Fly fishing the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River was the last stop on our fly fishing road trip. We only fished an afternoon, evening and the following morning. It might be time for another Odds and Ends post. I write these occasionally to highlight a few extra items that don’t make it into their own post. First, I’d like to thank the McKenzie Flyfishers for inviting me to present my Fly Fishing Road Trips at their monthly meeting last night. I had a…

I wanted to highlight one of the Sparkle Dun deer hair patches I’ve been using. In the last week, I tied 6 dozen Green Drake Sparkle Duns and it reminded me how important finding and using the right deer hair is to successfully tie these flies. Half of the flies were for a customer and…
