Filling a Customer Fly Order

I’ve been at the vise quite a bit the last several weeks tying customer orders. My customers seem to be patient as I am spending much more time on the water. I just finished filling a customer fly order for 68 flies, trying to tie a few flies each day before or after fishing. Many of the flies are a variety of smaller BWO fly patterns. But a couple caddis, beetle, and PMDs are included in his order as well. I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the flies.

There were 10 different fly patterns, some of them in two or three sizes. I enjoy orders like this, tying a variety of flies. I couldn’t be a commercial tyer, tying dozens and dozens of the same pattern.

I’ll begin with a few LaFontaine Emergent Sparkle Pupas. I haven’t tied these in awhile and started with a few for my fly box to get back in the groove.

The tan are size 18 and green a size 16.

This is a Parachute BWO (#18 and 20).

And a CDC & Biot BWO (#18 and 20).

Next is an Almost There Baetis – Olive (#20).

And a couple RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripples.

The PMD in size 16 and BWO in size 18.

Lastly, my customer requested a few Floating Nymphs. Here are PMD (#16) and BWO (#20) variations.

I’ve never fished a Floating Nymph, but tied a couple of the PMD version. I’ll see if the fish like it!

I hope he finds a few fish with these flies!

Enjoy…go fish!

The Metallic Caddis is this week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly. I found this fly pattern in the mid-90’s from Randall Kaufmann’s Tying Nymphs book. I don’t think I had tied a lot of bead-head nymphs as beads only came to America in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. Tying Nymphs stated Dennis Black of Umpqua Feather Merchants signed…

  1. Just looking at those makes me want to try to tie again! Really nice! Sometimes, you make my day John. If I can’t fish, at least I can dream.
