Bob Jacklin Gray Drake

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is a Bob Jacklin Gray Drake.

I found this fly when I walked into his fly shop last week. I stood in front of the fly bins and selected several I thought would make likely candidates for my TBT posts.

I think I’m on a drake kick, since last week’s TBT post was a drake and this week’s was about drakes on the Henry’s Fork.

Jacklin is a fixture in West Yellowstone, having arrived in 1967. Bob worked in Bud Lilly’s Trout Shop and Jim Danskin’s Tackle Shop before opening his own West Yellowstone Jacklin’s Fly Shop in 1974.

In 2000, Bob was recognized for his fly tying skills with the prestigious International Federation of Fly Fishers’ Buz Buszek Fly Tying Award.

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the WD-40. The WD-40 was developed by Mark Engler for the Frying Pan River in Colorado back in 1982. The WD is for Wood Duck, which is used in the tail and wingcase, although I’ve seen the fly tied with Mallard Flank as well. The fly can be used…

I know all my subscribers expect to see a RiverKeeper Flies post each week. But it’s hard for me to focus on fly fishing content with all the protests and unrest about underlying issues in America today. I see you…I hear you…I’m learning. I may not have the right words, but I feel I need…

Are you fly fishing with beetle patterns? You should. Why do fish eat beetles? Who cares. All I know is my wife and I have caught some of our biggest trout recently with Beetle Bailey. This week’s Throw Back Thursday fly is the Western Coachman. It can be fished wet or dry. I got the idea for this fly after reading my most recent copy of Northwest Fly Fishing. There was a very nice article called Masters at the Bench by David Johnson, featuring Buz Buszek. Looking through the list…

  • Muddler Minnow

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Muddler Minnow. Muddlers imitate various bait fish, namely sculpins. This is a fly I tied many years ago…a feeble attempt at best. The development of the Muddler Minnow was attributed to Don Gapen of Anoka, Minnesota in 1937. Don’s parents ran the Gateway Lodge Resort on the shore…
