Roy Palm’s Special Emerger

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Roy Palm’s Special Emerger, tied below in size 20.

I was introduced to this fly recently when a customer asked if I had heard of Roy’s Special Emerger, a midge pattern. He relayed a story of watching a guide with clients catching fish on a river in Colorado. They were using this fly pattern.

I hadn’t, but wondered if the name “Roy” was Roy Palm because he was fishing a Colorado river and I had featured a Roy Palm fly, Roy Palm’s Frying Pan Biot Green Drake Parachute.

Turns out it was.

Roy Palm of Frying Pan Anglers in Colorado created this fly. Unfortunately, Roy passed away in November 2019.

I saw lots of midges on my home waters the last time I was out. I’ll have to give this fly a try!

Enjoy…go fish, stay safe!
