Original North Fork Special

I found this fly when visiting North Fork Anglers in Cody, WY while fly fishing the North Fork Shoshone River.

I’d heard about the North Fork Special from watching Trout TV a few years ago. Tim Wade is the owner of North Fork Anglers.

I was able to chat with Tim about developing the North Fork Special. He created the fly in the mid 1990’s for the Yellowstone River. He stated it was one of the first flies tied on a curved hook. The goose biots allow the fly to rock back and forth as it sinks in the water column. The original colors were black with a silver bead and tan with a gold bead.

Since then, he has added several additional versions including black with purple bead, red bead or orange bead.

The North Fork Special has been successful in many areas around the world including Australia, New Zealand, Austria, as well as other countries in Europe.

After all, it’s winter and I didn’t expect summertime hatches. I was hoping for a Blue Wing Olive hatch of 30 minutes or…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Lightning Bug. I recently added the Lightning Bug nymph to the Fly Patterns list on RiverKeeper Flies. • Always Fish an Eddy

Eddies are one of my favorite places to fish. I’ve caught some nice fish in eddies. It would be difficult to determine what my favorite water to fish is, whether it’s eddies, runs, boulders, or tail outs. I think the answer is WATER. But I always fish an eddy. The image above is a small…
