We just returned yesterday from our South America trip in Patagonia and I thought I’d post a few images from Chile. I hope to provide more information about each of our trip beginning next week. In addition, you’ll find a link below to a Zoom fly tying class I’ll be teaching on Thursday, February 1.
We continued our Patagonia fly fishing adventure by traveling to Puerto Natales in southern Chile to fish with Rumbo Patagon. It is their inagural season and we wanted to experience the Brown trout fishing there.
We arrived a couple days early and toured Torres del Paine National Park. The views were stunning as the weather gods smiled down upon us. The clouds arrived and lifted throughout the day to give us a peek at the mountains.
We were surrounded by spectacular scenery in the many rivers and one lake we fished.

With the exception of the lake, all the water was located on private estancias. Here is an example of the roads less traveled.

But we caught many nice fish ranging from 8 to 24 inches.
Patagonia is known for wind and it didn’t disappoint us. Not every day was over-the-top wind, but there were times…
I plan to provide more information on our adventure in Argentina and Chile. I’ll begin with the Argentina fly fishing at Chochoy Mallin with SET Fly Fishing.

Very nice browns John! Trip of a lifetime….
When my good friend Jim Repine was alive, he invited us to stay with him and fish at his small lodge, at Futaleafu. All we would have to pay for would have been airfare – Jim would have very graciously hosted us to everything else.
Life intervened and we never made the trip, although your fellow Oregonians (Dave Hughes and the late John Eustice) fished there with Jim. The Fiestas “Don Jeem” threw on the last night before his guest’s departures would have alone made the trip.
When we’re together next, we can tell stories – I want to add your collection of of reminiscences to those I’ve heard from Dave and John, and share some of theirs, second-hand, with you.
You are truly blessed to have made this trip – and your photographs keep getting better.
