Supporting Casting for Recovery

I just finished tying a box of 7 dozen flies I’m donating to an upcoming Casting for Recovery (CfR) auction supporting Casting for Recovery. I hope these flies will bring in a few dollars for the Southern Oregon CfR retreat my wife leads.

Casting for Recovery (CfR) is a retreat designed to help women in various stages of breast cancer enrich their lives through fly fishing.

Retreats are offered at no cost to the participants and “offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life, and experience healing connections with other women and nature.” (CfR website)

This is the time of year the national organization raises funds for their operations as well as over 40 retreats across the US.

Here is the box of flies I tied, a total of 84 flies.

The CPR Tournament replaces the Cast One event we’ve participated in on the Bitterroot River in Hamilton, MT.

Here are links to my posts:

This is a simple way to support CfR by fishing your home waters between October 15-21, capturing a photo or two of the fish you catch and submitting it to a Facebook group. A panel of judges will choose winners for each category and announced during the live auction on October 22. Click HERE to sign up.

  • Quill Gordon

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Quill Gordon. I think there’s something elegant about Catskill style flies. And the Quill Gordon is one of the originals. It was created by Theodore Gordon before 1906. Gordon was born in Pennsylvania in 1854 and is recognized as the father of dry fly fishing in America….

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Wilson Ant. I haven’t tied a Ray Bergman fly recently, so I thought I’d pull out his book Trout (1938) and the Wilson Ant spoke to me. You’ll find this fly on Plate No. 9, page 254. I like the elegance and simplicity of a Ray Bergman wet fly. I’ve…

  • Fishing with Nymphs

I’ve been busy tying flies lately. But I was able to get to the river a couple of times recently and reconciled to myself if I really wanted to catch fish, fishing with nymphs was the best solution. What a difference a year makes. Last year by this time, we had five feet of snow…

  1. John, I always enjoy your posts but had to comment on this one. My wife and I were very active in the Ohio CFR retreat for a ten year period. Super program for the ladies!! My wife was a huge part of the program helping in several areas. The retreat leader’s husband and I were gophers, sign hangers as well as anything else that needed done to facilitate. Somehow I was elected to be one who located 14 worthy “River Helpers” for the fishing event on the last day. (enjoyed every minute of it).
PS: I very much enjoy your TBT posts! love seeing the old patterns and the stories behind them!
