Stimulator

It’s Thursday again and this week’s TBT fly is the Stimulator. I first learned of this fly from Randall Kaufmann’s book Tying Dry Flies. Tied many flies from that book.

This is an older fly I tied many years ago. I obtained the book in the early 90’s…so old is relative, I guess.

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Doughton’s Siletz Special. I recently completed a custom fly order for several sea run cutthroat flies and the Doughton’s Siletz Special was one of them. This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Ray Bergman’s Hawthorne. Bergman’s Hawthorne is a wet fly listed in his book entitled Trout (1940 – fourth printing) on page 64, Plate No. 4. As I’ve mentioned many times, I enjoy highlighting a Bergman wet fly because it forces me to sit down and tie these elegant flies. Bergman’s…

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Olive Thorax mayfly, tied here in size 18. This fly pattern is one of several I found in Randall Kaufmann’s Tying Dry Flies book that I tied and fished in the 1990’s. The Olive Thorax mayfly imitates a Baetis or Blue Wing Olive. Dry Flies helped introduce me to aquatic…

  • The Kate

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is called The Kate. It’s another Atlantic Salmon fly from an old fly box I ended up with. The Kate is credited to Mrs. Courtney, who developed the fly in the middle of the 19th century…yes, that long ago! One of the few flies credited to a woman fly…
