Magical Brown Drake Fly Fishing of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River Video

I’m not a videographer, but I took some footage of our experience fly fishing the Brown Drake hatch I’d like to share with you. It’s my first attempt at creating this type of content and not something I plan to do a lot of. I like to learn new things and creating my Magical Brown Drake Fly Fishing of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River video is one of them. I added it to my RiverKeeper Flies YouTube channel where you can see several fly tying videos for you fly tyers.

The image above is one of the many Brown Drake spinners we observed flying around on our first night.

Here is the dun. We found them hatching the last 30 minutes or so of daylight.

I hope you were able to read my post entitled Fly Fishing the Henry’s Fork Brown and Green Drake Hatches. Fly fishing the Henry’s Fork was one of the best experiences on our 40+ day fly fishing road trip.

And I owe it all to my wife.

We were fishing the Madison River and the fishing was only mediocre. We’d heard from other fly fishers about Salmonfly and Golden Stones hatching around Aston, ID. In addition, I always wanted to fish the well-known Green Drakes hatch around Last Chance and the Harriman Ranch which opens on June 15th.

It also meant lots of fly fishers. More than the Madison? I wasn’t sure.

I was a little reticent. My wife said “let’s give it a try. We can always drive back.”

She was right…usually is.

Here is a link to the video. I hope you enjoy it.

Enjoy…go fish, stay safe!

It’s been cold out lately. As I write today’s post early this morning, the thermometer reads 7 degrees. That’s right…single digits. For some reason, I haven’t made it out to the river lately. This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Mike Lawson’s EZ Caddis. Lawson’s EZ Caddis is an offshoot of his Spent Partridge Caddis he created over 40 years ago. The reason is fairly simple how the fly came about…old age. Yup, as Mike got older it was more difficult for him to pick up the fly….

  • McMurray Ant

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the McMurray Ant. Ed Sutryn invented the McMurray Ant in the early 1960’s while fishing on a stream in McMurray, Pennsylvania. He watched trout crazily feeding on ants. Sometime later, he found out they were timber ants and set about designing a fly using monofilament, cork, and black…

  1. Nice video John! You captured some really beautiful images there – both in video and photos. Looked like you were using the good old standard soft hackle to imitate those big drakes?

    1. Tim – not the classic soft hackle. It’s something I’ve been working on for a couple of years. We call it our Beta Spinner. I’ll be adding the fly pattern sheet to the website in the future.

  2. John what a wonderful video of your wife showing you how to land several fish. Hopefully she charges you for her lessons.

  3. Excellent video. The reflections on the river were magnificent. Karen’s image of landing fish, makes me wish I was there to enjoy seeing her at her best. Yep another feather in your cap. Please keep making videos. This gave my day a great start.
