Did you ever have one of those days? I did.
The day began with me attempting to make another fly tying video. I thought. But the battery level was in the red.
I tested my camera the other day preparing for my upcoming Zoom fly tying class this Thursday, on 1/21 at 5 pm PST. I’ll be teaching how I tie an X Caddis and Sparkle Dun.
I forgot to charge the battery. OK, I said to myself. No big deal. I plugged in a cord and proceeded to tie five flies in preparation of making the video. I was all set.
I even loaded the van with my waders and boots because I planned on heading to the river for a couple of hours after shooting my fly tying video.
Back at the vise, I checked the battery and it appeared full. Good.
I pushed the “record” button and started talking and tying.
Everything went well for the first 15 minutes or so, then I broke my thread. Well, that happens sometimes. It hasn’t happened to me for a while, but I took a deep breath and continued on…for about three more minutes until it happened again!
I started tying with a new spool because the previous one didn’t have a lot of thread remaining after tying my “warm up” flies. I thought at the time it would be just my luck to run out of thread when making the video. So I pulled out a new spool. I said to myself I wonder if the thread has the same breaking limit as the one I was using? It will be fine, I’m sure.
And then it wasn’t.
I kinda recovered and then the camera shut off. Dead battery. But I wasn’t finished!
But I was. I gave up and decided I’ll make another video later this week.
No big deal.
So, I went fishing.
It was a beautiful blue sky and sunshine day, although the temperature was in the low 40’s.
I was looking forward to fishing with my Euro nymph rod again. I fished last week and landed several fish including this small Bull Trout…
and a Rainbow…
and several Whitefish.
Remember my recent post about Preparing for Winter Nymph Fishing? Here’s what I wrote…”Five knots are required to fish the method I use. If you snag the bottom and lose everything, five more knots are needed.” Well, that happened today.
Yes, I ended up tying several knots today as I lost five flies.
No big deal about the flies. I tie them, right?
But it seemed I did nothing but tie knots. I felt like my vise and video experience followed me to the river.
I just shook my head and sat on the bank and watched for rising trout. It didn’t happen, but I was on the river.
It could have been much worse. I felt lucky to land a Rainbow.
I hooked another fish, but lost it due to a bad knot!!
Uggghhh!
I got to practice my knot tying today!
Lastly, I took a picture of the nice fish I landed today. Turned out blurry! Of course!
I’m sure nothing like this has happened to you, right?
