Original North Fork Special

I found this fly when visiting North Fork Anglers in Cody, WY while fly fishing the North Fork Shoshone River.

I’d heard about the North Fork Special from watching Trout TV a few years ago. Tim Wade is the owner of North Fork Anglers.

I was able to chat with Tim about developing the North Fork Special. He created the fly in the mid 1990’s for the Yellowstone River. He stated it was one of the first flies tied on a curved hook. The goose biots allow the fly to rock back and forth as it sinks in the water column. The original colors were black with a silver bead and tan with a gold bead.

Since then, he has added several additional versions including black with purple bead, red bead or orange bead.

The North Fork Special has been successful in many areas around the world including Australia, New Zealand, Austria, as well as other countries in Europe.

It’s been cold out lately. As I write today’s post early this morning, the thermometer reads 7 degrees. That’s right…single digits. For some reason, I haven’t made it out to the river lately. • Royal Coachman Dry Fly

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the classic Royal Coachman dry fly. This attractor fly pattern is one that many older fly fishers recognize. It truly is a classic! It was one of many flies I found in a friend’s old fly box.
