Dozens of Sparkle Duns

In December, I wrote a post entitled What Flies to Tie. I talked about checking my list of flies I tied in 2018 to determine where to begin. A gentle nudge came to me in the form of a fly order which included a variety of Sparkle Dun mayflies. Not only am I tying dozens of Sparkle Duns for my customer, I’m taking the opportunity to fill a few holes in the provider box as well.

So I’ve been at my fly tying desk tying dozens of these great flies.

Here are a few remnants from tying them…empty Daiichi hook packages, thread spool, and a sad piece of deer hair.

I’m going to miss this piece of Sparkle Dun deer hair I purchased from Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, MT. Even though it looks small, I’d guess a couple hundred flies were tied using it.

I tie Sparkle Duns to imitate BWO’s, Callibaetis, PMD’s, and Green Drakes. It’s a fly I continue to have confidence in and it’s easy to tie.

Well, back to the vise. I hear Sparkle Duns calling my name!

Enjoy…go fish!

I’m still at the vise and finished another fly order this week. I’m almost caught up with my fly orders, which is a good thing because we’re leaving on another trip in two weeks. More on that later. This was a small order consisting of Art Flick’s Red Quill pictured above and the Delaware Adams….

We returned last week from Hawaii where we enjoyed beautiful warm weather. Our time was split between the Big Island and Maui. Here are a few spinner dolphins we could see from our Kailua – Kona condo along the bay. I’m back at the vise, working to fill orders for those on my wait list….

Today’s Throw Back Thursday fly. This fly is a what we called the Stovepipe back in the day. It’s tied different than other Stovepipes flies I’ve seen. And was tied a LONG time ago. Makes me smile at my tying abilities back then.  🙂  Hope you enjoy this “blast from the past”!

  • Mike Mercer’s Profile Spinner – PMD

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Mike Mercer’s Profile Spinner – PMD. I found this fly pattern in Mike Mercer’s Creative Fly Tying (2005) book. He relays a problem he had fishing spinner patterns on California’s Fall River where thousands and thousands of natural PMD Spinners were floating downstream with trout gorging themselves on these insects….

  • Black Brahan Atlantic Salmon Fly

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Black Brahan Atlantic Salmon Fly. This is one of five Atlantic Salmon flies my friend Jim Fisher purchased during his 1986 fishing trip on the river Spey in Strathspey, Scotland. He was successful landing a 32 inch, 12 pound Atlantic Salmon on a Munro Killer using a Winston 9′…

  • Fall Images from the River

I’ve been fortunate to spend quite a bit of time on my home water, the Metolius. Some days I don’t see an insect on the water. Other days, bugs float downstream on the water’s surface, but no fish rise. What I hope for is finding a few rings or noses, a sign fish are actively…

  1. John.. do you ever tie Wyatt’s Deer Hair Emerger as a change of pace… Very similar style fly… Han’s Weilenmann has good videos of tying this fly in two different ways…
I’ve fished it along with your great sparkle duns and find them both effective…
