Pheasant Tail Version

Materials

 

Hook:

Dai Riki 060 or 135, #16 – 20

Bead:

1.5 mm gold or XS silver lined glass bead (size 15); 2 mm for #16

Thread:

6/0 Danville Fly Master tobacco brown (#47) and Danville black

Tail:

Mallard flank, DMC embroidery thread (#938), or bonefish tan Krystal Flash

Rib:

Copper, gold, or ginger wire – small

Body:

Danville Fly Master 6/0 tobacco brown

Thorax:

6/0 Danville black

Wing:

Wapsi Midge Mirage Opal or Pearl Krystal Flash

Option: To make the fly bullet proof, replace the Wood Duck tail with Bonefish Tan Krystal Flash; another variation by Bill Seitz.

Directions:

  1. Debarb hook and place bead on hook (bead is optional).
  2. Start thread behind bead.
  3. Attach 2 strands of DMC embroidery thread or 6 to 8 strands of bonefish tan Krystal Flash, or Wood Duck fibers.
  4. Attach rib on side of hook opposite of tyer.
  5. Wind thread to barb, securely tying tail and rib materials.
  6. Wrap thread forward creating a SLIM tapered body.
  7. Wrap rib forward using 4 to 5 turns and secure.
  8. Whip finish thread and start new thread of different color.
  9. Wrap about 75% of the thorax with thread and attach 2 short strands of pearl Krystal Flash such that 2 strands are attached on one side of thorax and 2 on the other side of the thorax (see photo). These become the legs.
  10. Finish wrapping the thorax and whip finish.
  11. Trim tail to hook gap in length and wings to half of hook gap.
  12. Coat the entire fly with Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nail or a UV resin such as Hydro.
