Cast One for Hope Event in 2020

If you are a regular here at RiverKeeper Flies, you might recall my wife and I participated in Cast One for Hope on the Bitterroot River, MT last September. It was part of our last fly fishing road trip for the year, which was cut short due to snowstorms and frigid temperatures that buffeted Montana during last September and early October. We had a terrific time and just registered for the Cast One for Hope event in 2020.

Yes, that might be us fishing with our guide Sean O’brien of Osprey Outfitters.

Jessica Haydahl-Richardson was our videographer in another raft rowed by Hannah Barron Spencer, which followed us down the river to capture our experience, resulting in the video below of our epic day. It was tough fishing as the temperature had dropped 30 degrees and wind gusts between 30 to 40 mph! The video below is being used to advertise the Cast One for Hope event in 2020.

We are looking forward to floating down the Bitterroot River on September 26 in one of 17 rafts with a local guide as well as the Celebration dinner that evening. Our hope is for better weather than our experience in 2019.

If you are interested in being one of the fly fishers, act quickly. The event fills up fast. Otherwise, I encourage you to donate to Casting for Recovery in general or the Casting for Recovery Oregon – South retreat my wife leads.

The retreats can be life-changing for participants.

Enjoy…go fish!

  • Re-Stock the Hook Supply

I’ve been busy tying flies for customers and trying to refill the provider box. Since the first of the year, I’ve tied over 60 dozen flies. That’s more than 700 hooks, which means I need to re-stock the hook supply. I reviewed my hook inventory recently to determine how many hooks remained for the wide…

  • Fly Fishing Leaders

What leader length do I use? What tippet size do I fish? I’ve been asked those questions quite a bit. And I always point people to a previous RiverKeeper Flies post entitled Make Your Fly Fishing Leader Last Longer about the fly fishing leaders I use to fish dry flies. But if you are new to RiverKeeper Flies, perhaps…

  • Muddler Minnow

This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Muddler Minnow. Muddlers imitate various bait fish, namely sculpins. This is a fly I tied many years ago…a feeble attempt at best. The development of the Muddler Minnow was attributed to Don Gapen of Anoka, Minnesota in 1937. Don’s parents ran the Gateway Lodge Resort on the shore…
