I’ve written blogs recently about trying the Euro nymph style of fly fishing rather than my normal nymph set up. I thought I’d provide my thoughts as I create an updated nymph fly box. Several considerations go into my selection of nymphs I plan to carry – size, weight, profile, and color. Size and weight…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Ray Bergman Peacock. The Peacock is a Ray Bergman wet fly listed in his book entitled Trout (1940 – fourth printing) on page 169, Plate No. 7. I enjoy highlighting a Bergman wet fly because it forces me to sit down and tie it. It looks simple,…
Did you happen to read last week’s post entitled Winter Fishing with Euro Nymphs? I wrote about fishing with a couple Euro nymphs, the Pheasant Tail Perdigon (body of Veevus Body Quill) on the bottom, or point, and a Rainbow Warrior Perdigon. I fished several times last week, experimenting with different nymph rigging techniques. I’ve written over…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Sockeye John Aztec Fly. The Aztec fly was created by Dick Nelson in 1976. It was an innovative fly for it’s time and published in both Outdoor Life and Fly Fisherman. His son Bill Nelson tied this fly for me at the 2010 FFF Fly Fishing Fair…
I finally had the opportunity to get to the river and see if I could remember how to fish. It’s been a while. I blame it on all the snow we had and a couple of “bugs” I came down with. We stopped at the river on the way home from the 2019 NW Fly…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Tommy’s Twisted Sister. This fly came to me from Jimbo Busse. You might recognize his name because he is responsible for providing several images of Shane Stalcup’s flies recently. I received a Comment of appreciation from Jimbo for highlighting Shane’s flies. I always enjoy receiving Comments about my…
The 2019 NW Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Expo in Albany, OR begins in a couple of days. It’s one of the largest events of its kind in the country. Besides being a Demonstration Tyer on Friday and Saturday, I’ll be teaching Fine Tuning Your Tying Techniques class on Friday afternoon. I tied two flies…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday fly is the St Joe Special TBT. I first found this fly at the Idaho Fly Fishing Company in Avery, ID during our fly fishing trip to the St. Joe River in Idaho. I always enjoy going into local fly shops to see the flies which work for their waters….
We got hit this week with a snowstorm which quickly turned into A LOT OF SNOW. Shoveling and running the snow blower took time away from the vise where I’m working on several orders. For some reason, my brain wanders as I’m outside for an hour or two. I was thinking how lucky we are…
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Stalcup’s Cripple Emerger TBT. You may have seen a couple Shane Stalcup flies in previous TBT posts. I received a Comment of appreciation for highlighting Shane’s flies from a friend of his, Jimbo Busse. I always enjoy receiving Comments about my TBT posts because I’ve stirred a thought or two…
