Leader Wallet

Today’s Throw Back Thursday post is an old leader wallet.

I visited my good friend, Jim Fisher earlier this week and he pulled out several older fly fishing items in his collection. The leader wallet was one of them.

It was owned by his uncle Tony D’Andrea who lived in Idaho and fished the St. Joe river as his home waters in the 1950’s and early ’60’s.

As I opened the leader wallet and I was somewhat surprised to see the 9′ 5X and 6X Berkley tapered nylon leaders, especially 6X.

For some reason, I had assumed 4X or perhaps even 3X leader might have been used in the 1950’s. I don’t have any documentation, it was just a thought.

If you look closely, these leaders from Valu-Mart cost .19 and .25 cents.

Certainly, leader wallets still are available today and I have used them in the past. For some reason, I’ve gone away from them and carry a variety of leaders in my fly fishing pack.

You’ll be seeing several more TBT posts in the future from my conversation with Jim.

Enjoy…go fish!

I don’t know why they work so well, but purple flies seem to catch the fish’s attention. What really made me a believer is the biggest rainbow trout I’ve ever seen on the Metolius River was caught on a size 16 Purple Haze. That was a few years ago. I taped it at 26 1/2″….
