This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Shane Stalcup’s Adult Green Drake.
I’m getting to ready to tie some Green Drake flies for an order and remembered I had seen Stalcup’s Adult Green Drake recently. The fly can be found in Shane’s book titled Mayflies “Top to Bottom”.
Here are a couple comments about the fly design:
- Body – It’s made using white floss and colored with yellow and olive Prismacolor markers.
- Rib – Brown micro-tubing is used and can be stretched to create a narrow or wide rib depending upon how much pressure is used while wrapping.
- Wings – The wings are made from Medallion sheeting.
- Hackle – Two hackles are used for this fly, one wrapped around each wing.

Unfortunately, Shane passed away prematurely in 2011 at the age of 48.
Many of his flies can still be purchased in your local fly shop. You might give them a try. Watch a video or two of Shane tying his flies. You’ll see how “fishy” they really are.

Thank you for posting some of Shane’s flies. He was a very good friend, we both grew up in the fly tying world and fished together. He was a very innovative tier and had a lot of very successful patterns. He is sorely missed.
