Sometimes, I’m a “just-in-time” fly tyer. This video was shot on a Montana road trip. We’re headed east from Spokane towards the Big Hole river and I was trying to tie up some Spruce Moth patterns. My Top Twelve Dry Flies
I’m in a period of transition from fishing a lot to the fly tying vise. It’s a few days earlier than most years. I say someone throws the weather switch on November 1 and dry fly fishing changes dramatically. This year, the weather changed in two days and daytime highs of mid-70’s have been replaced…

Chartreuse Humpy
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Chartreuse Humpy. I’ve featured the Humpy as a TBT fly back in April 2015. But I chose this fly to highlight the importance of what fly tyers call “variant”.

Partridge and Yellow and Fur Thorax
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Sylvester Nemes Partridge and Yellow and Fur Thorax soft hackle. Since I was in a soft hackle mood from tying a few Starling and Purple soft hackle flies, I decided to pull out a few books and find another soft hackle fly to tie.

Mike Mercers Poxyback Green Drake
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is Mike Mercers Poxyback Green Drake Nymph. I’m tying this fly to complete a fly order and thought Mercer’s Poxyback Green Drake nymph was a great candidate for a TBT post.

Montreal
This week’s Throw Back Thursday Fly is the Montreal, another fly from the Ray Bergman collection. For some reason, I just like the elegance and simplicity of a Bergman wet fly. You can find the Montreal wet fly on Plate No. 6, page 123 of Bergman’s book entitled Trout (1940 – fourth printing). If you are a…
